At the heart of this piece is a segment of real driftwood, representing the raw, untamed essence of nature. Adorning this organic base are hyper-realistic white orchids with striking black centers, each meticulously sculpted from polymer clay. The flowers' lifelike appearance showcases my dedication to detail and mastery over more than a hundred plant species. This expertise is further exemplified by a realistic black butterfly perched atop the driftwood, also modeled from polymer clay, embodying the transience of life.
This sculpture is a testament to my artistic philosophy and technical skills. I sculpt every detail by hand, using various materials such as polymer clay, ceramics, air-dry clay, metal clays, and papier-mâché. Occasionally, I combine these mediums to enhance the textural and visual impact of my work. The creation of unique tools and the adaptation of established techniques allow for a hyper-realistic touch that brings each element to life.
"Vicious Circle of Life" invites viewers to reflect on the natural cycles that govern our existence and the interconnectedness of all living things. Through this sculpture, I aim to convey not just the visual splendor of nature, but also its underlying imperfections and the profound truths they reveal about life itself. This work embodies my journey as an artist—each piece is a study and recreation of the world as I see it, filtered through a lens of experience, knowledge, and a deep appreciation for the world’s complex beauty.

Yuliia Khovbosha is a Canadian-based sculptor born in Central Ukraine in 1989. She moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2023 due to war in her homeland and a threat to her life. Yuliia turned to sculpture to unveil art’s multifaceted nature without being confined to a single plane of perception.
Inspired by nature’s subtleties, she explores human-nature connections and the world’s complexity. Beyond environmental concerns, the artist addresses personal themes like gender equality and wartime struggles, having experienced forced immigration from Ukraine. Meticulously crafting over a hundred plant species and expanding into the animal realm, she uses diverse materials to create realism through unique techniques.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Audiovisual Arts (Kyiv International University) in 2010, Yuliia worked as a TV director for several years. Starting with creating high-realistic polymer clay flowers in 2014, Yuliia Khovbosha moved to more intricate sculptures. To express her vision, she constantly searches for new materials and even develops her exclusive tools.
