Lignes courtes ou longues, continues ou discontinues, courbes, parallèles ou croisées renforcent l'intensité du mouvement des danseurs, l'expressivité des visages et donnent vie et volume au costume.
La dichotomie ombres/ lumières suggère l'intensité dramatique des scènes, l'arrière-plan qui représente le corps de ballet ou le décor est traité par un système de hachures. Les silhouettes immobiles presque fantomatiques s’opposent au premier plan où l’action des danseurs-protagonistes se joue.
Le velouté du trait et les fines hachures suggèrent l'épaisseur atmosphérique et donne au dessin un effet proche d’une estampe.
