Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter born on March 30, 1853, in the village of Zundert in the Netherlands. He began his artistic career later in life, initially working as an art dealer before fully dedicating himself to painting in his late twenties. Van Gogh’s early works were characterized by somber tones and dark, earthy colors, reflecting his emotional struggles and the harsh conditions of rural life.

In 1886, van Gogh moved to Paris, where he encountered the works of the Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists, which significantly influenced his style. The vibrant colors and innovative techniques of artists like Claude Monet and Georges Seurat inspired van Gogh to adopt a brighter palette and develop his distinctive brushwork. During this period, he created some of his most famous works, including "The Starry Night," "Sunflowers," and "Irises."

Van Gogh’s artistic journey took him from Paris to the south of France, where he settled in Arles in 1888. This period was marked by prolific creativity and produced iconic paintings such as "The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum" and "The Bedroom." Despite his creative success, van Gogh struggled with severe mental health issues, leading to a famous incident in which he cut off part of his own ear.

In 1889, van Gogh admitted himself to the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he continued to paint and produced works like "Wheatfield with Crows" and "Irises." His mental health continued to deteriorate, culminating in his death from a gunshot wound on July 29, 1890, at the age of 37.

Van Gogh’s work was not widely recognized during his lifetime, but he is now celebrated as one of the most influential figures in Western art history. His use of color, bold brushstrokes, and emotive compositions have left a lasting impact on the art world, and his life and work continue to inspire countless artists and art enthusiasts around the globe.
