Born in 1982, Thomas Vanoost is an emerging contemporary artist, living and working in Brussels. Graduated from a photography school in 2002, he also pursued studies in philosophy, sociology and finance.

Between 2002 and 2016, he never stopped working on different photographic series around the themes of the city and movement, while pursuing a career in the investment banking sector.

He made his debut on the international art market in 2016 with his series 'instability' and 'visions of everyday chaos', which have been exhibited in several European countries.

His photographic work is represented by the Bell Gallery, based around Amsterdam and distributed in several galleries in the Netherlands and Belgium.

My photographic approach finds its sources in ontology, the branch of philosophy that is interested in the nature of being, and in phenomenology, which is interested among other things in the way which the world is perceived. Without going into detail or using too much jargon, I would like to give some keys to understanding my approach.
The central concept around which this series is structured is the idea that all reality is intrinsically chaotic and unstable. This vision of the world as traversed by an eternal movement of change is nothing new in philosophy. Heraclitus of Ephesus had already formulated it in the 5th century BC, through the concept of "pantha rei", an expression which literally means "all things flow" and which expresses the idea of a world in perpetual motion. Today, this concept remains more relevant than ever. For better or for worse, we live in a changing world, which evolves so quickly that we are not always able to keep up with it. And yet, we, human beings, tend to perceive it as something relatively stable and permanent.

This dichotomy is quite paradoxical. On the one hand, reality is perceived as relatively fixed and unchanging, while on the other hand we can see and feel movement all around us.

My photographic work seeks to restore a certain balance by trying to visually express this chaos, this instability of existence. By working with multiple exposures, that is to say by photographing the same city scene through temporality, and by constructing my images according to the mode of movement, I seek to convey this impression of "pantha rei".
