One crisp autumn evening, Mr. Reed Foster returned to his quiet home on the edge of town. The air carried a whisper of fallen leaves, and the sky had begun its descent into darkness. He was a man of routine - always punctual, always precise. As the grandfather clock in the hallway struck seven, he uncorked a bottle of 2002 Ravenswood Zinfandel, a rare reserve he had been saving for just the right evening. Tonight, he told himself, was perfect.
His table was a portrait of simple elegance: a perfectly set plate with thin slices of prosciutto, curly leaves of endive, a crusty loaf of bread torn in half, a modest cluster of olives, and a wedge of cheese. A crimson napkin lay draped over a lace runner, leading the eye toward a knife resting with intent. A decanter stood tall and proud beside a wine glass already half full - one would almost think it had been waiting for him.
On the table there was a brass tin glinted under the lamp’s light. Set into its front was a small, richly painted portrait - the unmistakable face of Joel Peterson, founder of Ravenswood Winery. The brushwork was precise, elegant, and unmistakably the work of Tatiana McWethy, the enigmatic Russian artist whose commissioned miniatures were as rare as they were valuable.
Mr. Foster knew the man behind the portrait all too well. Joel Peterson had once been a partner, briefly, during the heady early days of Fosters’s import business. But ambition soured the soil where the grapes once flourished. They had gone their separate ways - amicably in public, but with plenty of splinters left behind.
Just as he raised the glass to his lips, there was a knock—three sharp raps on the door. Unusual. He wasn’t expecting anyone.
He opened the door to find no one - only an envelope on the mat, bearing his name. Inside there was a letter. Its contents were brief, but chilling:
“You have the elephant. I want what’s inside. Midnight. Don’t drink the wine.”
The note was unsigned.
Foster turned back to the table, suddenly aware of the wooden elephant standing sentinel beside the decanter. A gift from a market in Marrakesh, or so he’d been told by the dealer. He had never thought to question its hollow weight until now.
He sat, the wine untouched, his appetite gone. The letter lay beside the tin, catching the light at an angle that revealed faint smudges - fingerprints, maybe. Or old blood. The elephant watched in silence.
Why Joel’s face? Why now? And who knew that Foster would open that particular bottle, on that particular night?
The wine stayed sealed in the glass. Midnight was only hours away.

After graduating from Zheleznogorsky Art College, she studied several years at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art. In 2006 Tatiana married and moved California. Since that time she participated in many art exhibitions, won prestigious art awards, painted frescos and iconostasis for churches. Her art works are in numerous art collections in the US and around the world.
