Finalmente la battaglia finì; non perché qualcuno avesse vinto, ma per mancanza di contendenti.
Mi alzai da terra dove ero stato scaraventato dallo spostamento d'aria di una granata; mi guardai
intorno: era un miscuglio di carne e acciaio. Ripetei più volte dentro di me "nessuno ha vinto!'"; è il
difetto di ogni guerra: nessuno vince. Mi parve di sentire il mio nome: "Riccardo, Riccardo" . Mi
girai intorno per meglio sentire. Poco più non là, da un corpo metallico sentivo pronunciare il mio
nome. Mi avvicinai e un robot, dondolando una mano colma di debolezza mi chiese:" Dunque non
mi riconosci?" Lo riconobbi: era Serse, il vecchio mio robot serie seimila; erano ormai tre anni da
quando, un giorno, non era più tornato a casa. Il mio vecchio Serse, quello che mi vide nascere e
poi giocare con me sia da piccolo, sia da grande. Mi precipitai da lui per vederlo, abbracciarlo e
capire quanto fosse ferito. Stava spegnendosi, ma ebbe ancora forza per ringraziare la fortuna di
avermi visto poi, con voce calma, mi disse che gli pareva impossibile che spegnendosi finisse tutto
per lui e così per tutti i robot. Noi umani avevamo inferno e paradiso, sarebbe stato bello che
anche per loro, ci fosse un piccolo angolo di paradiso e morì. Non persi un attimo, gli svitai la
calotta e recuperata la barretta della memoria la avvolsi in un fazzoletto e me la infilai in tasca.
Non potevo donargli un po' di paradiso, ma la scatola della memoria, quella avrei potuto riattivarla
e avere ancora un inno di Serse con me
Dalla memoria di Serse, estrassi tanti ricordi; seppi anche che era stato arruolato a forza e spedito
nelle aree orientali. Ascoltavo spesso i suoi ricordi finché un giorno sentii dirmi "ciao Riccardo":
aveva trovato il suo angolo di paradiso.
