Sofia Passos
I am presenting a language of perception, texture and colour but, most of all a mindful savour of each detail. Planetary landscapes from our planetary history to our subatomic dimension, flying over the surface of my conscience and sense of self, matter and light shining through the water.
That's how I see us under our skin. Perceiving amazing creatures of matter and light shining through our 80% water bodies, sharing our perceptions as we go together in this journey called life.
I come from a long series of lost opportunities, bad choices and dead ends. This is not what a biography should look like, but I don't care. As a human, I did all I could with all I had and found peace with this recently as I'm almost 50 years old and after half a century of self-blaming I'm now conscious it could have been much worse.
I was born in Huambo, Angola. Grew up near Lisboa Portugal. Studied architecture and completed my degree in set and costume design at ESTC College. A series of family, health and life events got in the way of what would have been another me and only in 2020/21 during the pandemic, I was back to fineliners, graphite, and got to know the pleasure of a digital table.
My inspiration is deep space, silent flying in space, light through liquid reflecting over surfaces, microscopic landscapes, minimal music such as Nils Frahm and Philipe Glass, and the powerful Mark Rothko paintings. I'm also inspired by the Taoist and Buddhist philosophies, by nothingness and the Tao. I am also eternally humbled by the dimension and beauty of the inconceivable giant celestial bodies we perceive as tiny stars.
I'm also presenting some digital portraits. I've been drawing tired, sad but also hopeful, shining expressions with wrinkles, simple lines, free spontaneous textures and a few moments of red and pink as well as some botanical elements. I'm inspired by Asian esthetic, philosophy and spirituality and by the Japanese white, red, black and pink, in what concerns portraits.
Although I understand digital illustration is seen as more "functional", it gives me a huge pleasure to work with RGB and light. I am in the middle point between both worlds. Instead of pigment, I'm using digital colours but my relation with the tools (Krita and Affinity), process and state of mind is the same as if I was before a canvas.

Been away for a good reason - Yayoi Kusama (Serralves Museum)
Yayoi Kusama, Serralves Foundation, Porto Portugal
I travelled to Porto, one of my favourite places in Portugal. One of the main reasons for going there was to visit Yayoi Kusama exhibition at Serralves Foundation, Porto's Museum of Contemporary Art.
I'm so glad I did that. About 160 artworks, from her first drawings as a teenager during the Second World War until her recent immersive creative experiences.
There was also an impressive exhibition dedicated to the work of Álvaro Siza Vieira, that would justify the visit.
I'm not describing in detail Serralves, Yayoi Kusama or Alvaro Siza because I don't feel able or entitled to do so, but I would strongly suggest some research and, who knows, a visit to this beautiful town and Museum.
This was an inspiring break from everyday activities and my work, so tomorrow I'll be here again fully recharged and blessed to have the opportunity of sitting on the shoulders of such incredible masters.

Music to my eyes
I was listening to Kham Meslien while travelling through colour and experiencing its temperature and interconnection, somewhere between far away and as "in the present moment" as it's humanly possible.
I can't present my work immersed in its birth soundtrack, but somehow it feels unplugged without it. Working with digital technologies reminds me that working with RGB is working with light, electricity, frequencies, and waves that travel just as music does.
It´s fascinating to feel part of that dance.
Embracing reality
Detail Portrait #4 Sofia Passos
It's April. The sun is shining. I might as well just see the truth as it is and not as I wish it could be or as I've been afraid it could turn out.
A pragmatic perspective over a beautiful bright sunshiny day.
Thank you.
Why wait?
(Small detail of Poster #14 at my artmajeur profile https://artmajeur.link/4DJCU6 )
Babies don't understand waiting. Me neither. Life is boiling, life is happening by the minute. It could be better, could be greater, could be entire.
Today is Saturday, a sunny day in Lisboa, the sea is calling, the sun is calling me too. I wanted to publish this post though. It's Spring. Days are getting bigger and I just can't wait for those long June afternoons.
I understand the deep blues, the fresh greens, the philosophical greys. I know we need the darker tones, the black shadows over the canvas of our lives. That's how we grow deeper and higher. However, there are instances when there's no time, no more room for doubts, questioning, and waiting.
Go. Grab all you've learned, all your inner peace, all your joy, all your broken pieces and go where that loving voice of a good life is calling you from.
I'll meet you there.
Social
I am not social. That's a problem. That's about 45% of my profile strength missing which is kind of metaphoric and makes me wonder.
This week, in order to share my work I created an Instagram profile at https://www.instagram.com/sofiapassos1974/ and a Dribbble profile at https://dribbble.com/SofiaPassos and will probably try to do the same at Behance and DeviantArt.
Starting from scratch is being invisible and unheard of, which was ok for a non-social being such as I've been.
I feel peace in silence. I really don't need much.
Still, solitude is not productive when you want to reach out and let people know about what I've been working on and bring something good to someone out there who happens to enjoy my stuff.
So here I am.
Expanding.
Portrait and Lisboa
(Detail of a portrait for sale at https://www.artmajeur.com/sofia-passos/en/artworks/17763652/portrait-1)
In this portrait, I depicted Lisboa, where I live. There's a mixture of being tired and serene, sadness and dreams, a strong soul and a fresh beauty that, in contrast, seems to be in mourning.
Wearing a black shawl over her shoulders, this woman could be singing fado but, at the moment, she is just breathing, thinking, dreaming, missing the past, maybe listening to a guitar waiting for the right moment to make her voice heard.
Shadow work
(Small detail of my Poster #6 at https://www.artmajeur.com/sofia-passos/en/artworks/17761705/poster-6)
These have been mysterious weeks for me. Weird deep dreams and nightmares that turn out to be useful and give me some insights. I used to be afraid of the dark when I was a child and even as a young adult. Not anymore. It's not about turning off the light. It's about all that my mind brings up as I face the void of shapes and colours and my senses gradually adapt to almost nothingness.
It's not disturbing anymore.
Life is a weird dream anyway.
Waves and syncronicities
(Small detail of an illustration I just uploaded)
I was working on some more details for this illustration, listening to YouTube videos in the background. To my surprise, out of nowhere, a guy is describing a dream. In his dream, he sees waves, a square of ocean, and small sources of blood emerge and come together.
In this video, this man is describing this amazing dream and interpreting it as being about connection, about us connecting from the deep unconscious of the ocean, from the temperature of our blood, our bodies. He is still moved as this was an intense dream and, as I am listening, I realize I was illustrating the same image.
It was jaw-opening the level of synchronicity. I don't know where this image came from but perhaps a lot of us received it both in dreams and inspiration. This became very special and precious for me.
Thank you.
Thoughts are not silent
Thoughts are electricity. Brainwaves signalling the future that we are coming. Brutal savages with our poems and rockets, dreams and deadly fears.
Light through water
Seated outside in a coffee shop I was staring at this discrete spectacle, alive and playing together the primordial forces of life's existence on this planet: water and light. Vibrating and agitated as there is always movement, there's always something.
I have countless photos like this on my cellphone, which never ceases to amaze me. I know it´s all scientifically explainable and obvious. Still, this is as close as I can get to the concept of pure magic. Something beyond my comprehension, not the phenomena but how it makes me feel, a shared cellular language. A tiny moment of wonder.
I paint glances. Looking closer some particles seem to be floating in liquid through light. But I will never get even close to what I've seen that day.
