Skovsmose’s paintings balance sublimely between hesitation and ecstatic release. They are at once exalted, delicate, and vibrant. They are about perceiving. Skovsmose tries to convey the experience of perceiving something for the very first time. We become captivated by forms created right in front of us, by light and colors merging, moving, and metamorphosing in a split second. More than about a specific event or a specific locality, it is about the creative process itself: the eye and the body that receive the world’s phantasmagoria of impressions, materialized on the canvas with colors and shapes. The human faces and bodies quivering at the surface are partly an expression of the artist’s own sensations, and partly a symbol of existence as such (Tom Jorgensen).
