Sharon Bachner
I trained in painting and architecture at RISD and Tulane without gaining an art degree. I started making mosaics in 1995, and since there was very little if any access to formal training, I was entirely self-taught. Since that time, I have moved away from classical mosaics to more contemporary styles, methods and materials.
After a day in the studio, I spend an hour or two every evening working creating and developing a sketchbook of visual ideas. Only a select few make it into production. I start backward from the two-dimensional image, and develop a series of steps to create the various elements of the design. Each project integrates layered surfaces, borders, and textures, and so involves multiple techniques and media. The process for each project is unique and will usually implement a method that is new to me. For example, I have included a wide variety of stained and patterned glass, glass cane, fused glass, different kinds of sheet metal, wire, found metal, metal leaf, polymer clay, clay cane, glass beads, shattered tempered glass, lenticular sheets, and many other media.
