Sharon Bachner is a contemporary American artist known for her innovative approach to mosaic art. Although she did not pursue a formal art degree, she trained in painting and architecture at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Tulane University, which laid the groundwork for her creative practice.
Bachner began her journey into the world of mosaics in 1995, teaching herself the craft due to the limited availability of formal training resources at the time. Over the years, she has transitioned from traditional mosaic techniques to exploring more contemporary styles, methods, and materials.
Her artistic process involves dedicating time each evening to developing a sketchbook of visual ideas, from which only a select few are brought to fruition. Each project is approached by first conceptualizing a two-dimensional image and then devising a series of steps to create the final design. Her work integrates a variety of layered surfaces, borders, and textures, employing multiple techniques and media.
Bachner’s practice is characterized by its experimental nature, as she frequently incorporates new methods and diverse materials, including stained and patterned glass, glass cane, fused glass, sheet metal, wire, found metal, metal leaf, polymer clay, clay cane, glass beads, shattered tempered glass, and lenticular sheets. Sharon Bachner’s unique approach to mosaic art reflects her commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques and exploring new artistic possibilities.
