With average results in Formula 1, Ligier's best result was runner-up in the constructors' championship in 1980. A well-known characteristic of the team was its traditional blue paint on its cars (the color used by French motorsport) regardless of its financial situation, which generated great sympathy among French fans and the press. The other was the sponsorship of Gitanes cigarettes.
In mid-1994 and 1995, the team came under the control of several shareholders, and finally in January 1997 it was sold to the former driver and four-time Formula 1 world champion, Alain Prost, who renamed the team Prost Grand Prix. , thus ending the history and passage of Ligier in Formula 1.
