Samuel Etienne (aka Seitoung) est scientifique de formation, enseignant-chercheur en géosciences pendant plus de 20 ans (1997-2018). Il édite des fanzines depuis le milieu des années 1980. Co-fondateur du centre d’art contemporain Le Trampoline (à Vic-Le-Comte, 2017), il a créé les éditions Seteun en 1998 ; la revue Volume ! en 2002 ; la revue de recherches ZINES en 2020, dédiée aux fanzines et autres médias amateurs. Plus récemment, il a fondé la revue de bricolage science-art Fiction-Science avec l’école des Beaux-Arts de Rouen (ESADHaR) et le journal ACAZINE. Il a commencé à exposer ses travaux sur les fanzines en 2016 à l’invitation du Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain de la région PACA à Marseille. Il développe depuis une recherche artistique autour des fanzines do-it-yourself en tant que matériaux plastiques (installation de type zinewall) et sur les paysages en tant qu’entité sensorielle que l’on peut capturer (consommer) et éditer (conserver).

Sa philosophie artistique a toujours reposé sur le DIY (do-it-yourself) qui consiste à puiser dans l’énergie du moment pour créer sans restriction et sans obstacles liés à une quelconque absence de qualification ou de légitimité pour agir. Ce moteur créatif se traduit en un vaste champ d’expérimentations plastiques qu’il a décliné dans les essais 52/66 Manifestes pour un art rebelle 100% DIY (Strandflat/Les presses du réel) et Bricolage radical. Génie et banalité des fanzines do-it-yourself vol. 1 & 2 (Les presses du réel).

Cherchant à établir des ponts entre art contemporain et sciences de la Nature, il édite également la revue Boulders, qui s’attarde sur la place des blocs rocheux – naturels ou artificiels – dans la recherche contemporaine, artistique ou géomorphologique. Six numéros ont paru depuis 2018. La constante des recherches artistiques de Samuel Etienne / Seitoung est leur concrétisation systématique sous forme d’imprimés, depuis le fanzine photocopié jusqu’au fanzine ou livre d’artiste unique. Il a publié une centaine d’articles et ouvrages scientifiques et a édité plus d’une quarantaine de fanzines et artzines. 

Son dernier ouvrage, Faire les poussières (2023) est un coffret d'artiste réalisé à l'issue d'une résidence chez Friville Editions qui présente ses recherches sur la conservation/consommation des paysages sous la forme des "payscaments", objet plastique qu'il a inventé en 2016 et qu'il décline sous forme d'objets uniques ou de petites séries.
