Salvatore Caputo

Salvatore Caputo is an artist who has been operating on the national and international scene for nearly sixty years. His first personal exhibition dates back to 1964. Since then, there have been numerous appearances at highly qualified group exhibitions, along with personal exhibitions that were held both in museums and in private galleries. Trained as an architect, he then decided to make his passion for painting his main activity. After graduating, he experimented with new and different forms of expression, creating a notable graphic production, consisting of both engravings and serigraphs and lithographs, as well as a copious production of medals. Between the Seventies and Eighties, Caputo worked between Rome and Palermo. During those years, he grew a great interest towards sacred art, and created some furnishing and decoration works for various Italian churches. This trend will continue to stimulate the Author later, as demonstrated by the three exhibitions held in the first half of the 1990s at the Palermo Cathedral, which for the first time opened its doors to exhibitions of contemporary art. Starting from the 1980s, an important production of art objects began. Initially made on specially constructed supports as "travel objects" and often inspired in shape by medieval diptychs and triptychs, over the years these objects have found other forms of expression. In recent years, in fact, Caputo's artistic research has been oriented towards the recovery of the memory of places and traditions, as is evident from the production of art objects on reused materials. He also collaborated with ethnologists and anthropologists. Despite the diversity of his artworks subjects, Sicily, with the light of the Mediterranean Sea and its fascinating nocturnal atmospheres, is the protagonist of Salvatore Caputo's works. In his works, the Author has often reworked the classicism and colors of eastern Sicily, with the blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the shades of green of the Nebrodi Mountains and Greek finds. The most recent works, however, take a "journey towards the west" through the revisiting of the visual spaces of the Saline (saltworks that are located in the western part of Sicily).
