Rui Wang is a contemporary Chinese artist born in Jilin Province in 1987. He pursued his education in the arts at the Russian State Pedagogical University, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from 2009 to 2014 and a Master of Fine Arts from 2014 to 2016.
After returning to China, Wang spent five years creating root carvings with his father. Though he enjoyed the process, he hesitated to sell the works due to their fragility, as the delicate parts of the carvings were prone to damage during long-distance transportation. Despite this, he has continued to share his creations with others.
During his academic years, Wang struggled to understand Impressionism and often faced criticism for using too much black in his paintings. His teacher, a figure he greatly admired and referred to as his "grandfather," would often scold him for his dark tones and even took away his black paint. This teacher never praised Wang's work in four years, but his caring guidance left a deep impact on him. After graduation, when his teacher passed away, Wang began to reflect on their relationship and his artistic growth, eventually finding a connection to Impressionism, especially after being moved by the works of Claude Monet, whose style and appearance reminded him of his teacher.
Two years ago, Wang stopped creating root sculptures due to hand pain and decided to dedicate himself fully to painting. He now looks forward to the day he can meet his teacher again in the next world, hoping to finally receive the praise he longed for throughout his artistic journey.
