Rui Mendes nasceu em Guimarães.
Apesar do seu percurso académico não ter passado pelas artes plásticas, Rui descobre na arte digital uma forma de expressão ilimitada para a sua expressão artística.
A pintura digital nasce em 1972 com o lançamento do primeiro software, o SuperPaint. Rapidamente este tipo de produção artística foi adoptado para a publicidade e, já na entrada do século XXI, para o campo e mercado arte contemporânea. Hoje em dia a pintura digital é um dos novos meios de produção artística mais disseminado no panorama da arte contemporânea. Há mais possibilidades de liberdade na arte digital - ou seja, os "elementos mentais" são "livres para entrar em várias combinações" e, assim, a serem manipulados - do que na arquitetura, pintura e escultura. Esta é a razão que temos agora edifícios, fotografias bidimensionais e objetos tridimensionais modelados e criados por mecanismos digitais dos computadores e fabricados por máquinas controladas por computador.
