Rubén López R. nació en Santa Rosa de Cabal (Risaralda, Colombia), pero es antioqueño por familia y formación. Escritor, editor y dibujante. Fue fundador, director y editor de las revistas Oassys y Rampa. Hizo estudios inconclusos de antropología y sociología. Hizo guiones culturales para televisión. Tuvo una columna sobre Medellín en El Muro, la guía cultural de Buenos Aires. Hizo parte del staff de la revista literaria Oxigen de España, de la revista internacional de arte y cultura Francachela de Argentina-Chile, del portal literario Resonancias de Francia y de la revista cultural Archipiélago de México. Textos suyos han sido publicados en revistas, libros y periódicos de Colombia y el exterior.
Es autor de cuatro libros de ensayos psicoanalíticos: La concepción freudiana sobre el mundo exterior, Momentos del psicoanálisis en Colombia, La luciérnaga psicoanalítica y Hacia una estética psicoanalítica.
Además, los libros Contra el viento del olvido (en coautoría con John Saldarriaga, entrevista al escritor William Ospina), La estola púrpura (cuentos), Las heridas narcisistas de la humanidad (ensayos), El carnero azul (fábulas), Flor de lis en el País de la Mantequilla (novela infantil), Gorito el abusón (novela juvenil), La mirada (novela), De mujeres en literatura: sacrificio y negociación (ensayos literarios), Los filmes con Repelín cuchara (entrevistas y ensayos sobre el cine de Víctor Gaviria), (todos en Buscalibre).
