The sculptures are inspired by Paleolithic cave paintings in which animals are depicted with enormous muscle masses and thin limbs. Despite the non-naturalistic representation, the animals remain perfectly recognizable as if this alteration of shapes preserves their "soul", if one exists.
Roberto Barbuti returns to this representation, making it three-dimensional and, in turn, preserving the soul of the animals he creates and enhancing it by highlighting the characteristics of the various species. The animals are made of painted terracotta, modeled using the “colombino” technique which allows only the external wall of the statues to be built, leaving them empty inside.

Roberto Barbuti is a contemporary Italian sculptor renowned for his captivating representations of animals. Prior to pursuing his artistic passion, Barbuti held esteemed positions as a full professor of Computer Science at the University of Pisa until 2020, and as Director of the university's Natural History Museum from 2012 to 2019.

Barbuti's artistic journey began in the mid-nineties, drawing inspiration from the primal imagery found in cave paintings. Using the "Colombino" technique, he meticulously molds clay into lifelike animal forms, which are then painted with oil colors after firing. Despite their departure from naturalistic features, Barbuti's sculptures maintain the essence and spirit of the species they depict.

His artistic focus lies primarily on animals with naturally expansive muscle masses, including horses, bulls, buffaloes, wild boars, rhinos, and other powerful creatures. Barbuti's affinity for capturing the dynamic energy of these animals is evident in his sculptures, which exude strength and vitality.

In more recent works, Barbuti has turned his attention to crocodiles and hippos, exploring new dimensions of form and expression. Through his art, he seeks to convey not only the physical presence of these majestic creatures but also their intrinsic beauty and significance within the natural world.
