Robert Longo, born on January 7, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, is an influential American artist, filmmaker, photographer, and musician. He gained widespread recognition in the 1980s with his iconic Men in the Cities series, which features sharply dressed figures caught in intense, contorted poses. Raised on Long Island, Longo developed an early fascination with mass media—films, television, magazines, and comic books—which continues to shape his work.
Longo began his studies at the University of North Texas but left before graduating. He later studied sculpture under Leonda Finke, who encouraged his artistic pursuits, and in 1972, he received a scholarship to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. Upon returning to New York, he completed his BFA at Buffalo State College in 1975, where he also established connections with influential artists and helped found the Essex Art Center, now known as Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center. Moving to New York City in the late 1970s, he became a key figure in the No Wave art scene, which emphasized experimental, multimedia expression. Today, Longo lives and works between New York and East Hampton.
