A woodcut I made for my friend Carlos Alfredo Cortez -a print-maker, poet, and pacifistic- who died ten years ago. In the same fashion he used to pick up old pieces of wood and make prints with them, I found this old piece of wood and gave it some life by carving my friend's image with his logo of a Singing Coyote or Koyocuicatl in Nahuatl. RENÉ ARCEO

Born in Michoacán, Mexico he moved to Chicago in 1979. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. For 13-years he worked for the National Museum of Mexican Art in various capacities including Arts Director. In 2000 he started working for the Chicago Board of Education managing their art collection, website and related exhibitions as well as district wide art students programs. Since 2007 he has been an art instructor at Monroe Elementary School where, among other things, he has directed students in the creation of murals about world cultures that include Aztec, Maya, Taino, Egyptian and Inca.

Arceo has participated in dozens of group and solo exhibitions in the United States and Mexico, among other countries. He has received acquisition prizes and scholarship grants from the city of Chicago, the state of Illinois and Arts Midwest Foundation to promote and show his artworks in Mexico, the USA, France and Poland. His artworks can be found in public and private collections in those countries.

Arceo lives in Chicago where he co-founded the Galeria Ink Works (1984-87) and the Mexican Printmaking Workshop (1990-96). He founded Arceo Press in 2005 to foster international collaborations among printmakers. Through Arceo Press he has published ten limited edition print portfolios with artists from Mexico, Spain, Canada, France, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and the United States. The last four portfolios are dedicated to the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution (2010), Santitos -Saints in contemporary popular culture (2011), Rostros de la Migracion (2012, Faces of Migration), Posada:100 Year Legacy (2013).
