Raphael Perez: A Naive Painter of Urban Landscapes

Raphael Perez is an Israeli artist who specializes in naive paintings of urban landscapes. His works depict the cities he loves, such as Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Paris, and New York, in a colorful and whimsical way. He creates an idealized vision of reality, where the streets are wide and clean, the trees and flowers are abundant, and the people are happy and diverse.

Naive art is a term that describes a style of painting that does not follow the rules of perspective, proportion, or realism. Naive artists paint from their imagination, using simple shapes, bright colors, and expressive details. They often portray scenes from their everyday life, their memories, or their dreams.

Perez’s naive style is characterized by a lack of perspective, a simplified representation of forms, and a vibrant use of colors. He paints with acrylics on large canvases, using brushes to create texture and contrast. He often includes himself in his paintings, as a painter who observes and captures the scene in front of him. He also incorporates motifs such as kites, balloons, flags, couples, families, and animals to convey a sense of joy and harmony.

Perez’s paintings are influenced by his personal life and experiences. He was born in 1965 in Jerusalem to a religious family. He studied art at the Beer Sheva at schoul of visual art , Born in Jerusalem and later moved to Tel Aviv,

He came out as gay in his twenties and became an active member of the LGBT community. He met his partner in 1993 and they have been together ever since. Perez’s paintings celebrate his identity as a gay man and his love for his partner. He also depicts the diversity and tolerance of Tel Aviv, which is known as one of the most gay-friendly cities in the world.

Perez’s paintings have been exhibited in Israel and abroad, and have received positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. His works are considered to be original and refreshing, as they offer a different perspective on urban life. His paintings are not meant to be realistic or accurate, but rather to evoke a feeling of nostalgia, fantasy, and optimism. Perez invites the viewers to join him in his journey of exploring and enjoying the beauty of the cities.

Raphael Perez, also known by the Hebrew name Rafi Peretz, was born into a traditional family and raised in Jerusalem. Her father, Shimon Perez, worked as a receptionist at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, while her mother, Alice Aliza Perez, worked as an assistant at a daycare and later took care of a baby at home. Raphael has several siblings, each pursuing different paths in life, from education to spirituality to travel.

After serving in the Israeli Army Artillery Corps, Raphael dedicated 15 years to education in therapeutic children's settings, teaching art and movement. He graduated from the Visual Arts Center in Be'er Sheva, where he studied from 1989 to 1992. Since 1999, he has made a living from the sale of his artwork and has worked in his studio in Tel Aviv since 1995.

Over the years, Raphael has explored various themes in his art, notably interpersonal relationships. His first work focused on male-female relationships, before he openly accepted his homosexuality at the age of 32. Since then, he has created idealistic paintings depicting same-sex relationships in a domestic environment, depicting scenes from everyday life with tenderness and affection.

In addition to his artistic work, Raphael also kept diaries for many years, documenting his thoughts, experiences and personal struggles. These journals have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, providing deep insight into his personal and artistic journey.
