Epimetheus (altgriechisch Ἐπιμηθεύς Epimētheús, deutsch ‚der danach Denkende‘) ist in der griechischen Mythologie der Bruder von Prometheus, ebenso wie dieser ein Sohn des Iapetos.
Epimetheus erhielt von Zeus die wunderschöne Pandora, die von Hephaistos aus Lehm geschaffene erste Frau, welche die nach ihr benannte Büchse der Pandora mitbrachte. Diese war von jedem Olympier mit einer besonderen Gabe gefüllt worden, die – bis auf die Hoffnung – alle verderbenbringend waren. Die Plagen waren von Zeus als Bestrafung der Menschen für den Raub des Feuers durch Prometheus gedacht. Der warnte seinen Bruder Epimetheus zwar, niemals ein Geschenk der Götter anzunehmen, um den Menschen nicht zu schaden. Epimetheus hörte jedoch nicht auf die Warnung und, betört von ihrer Schönheit, heiratete er Pandora. Sie öffnete die Büchse und ließ damit alle Plagen, die sich in der Büchse befanden, auf die Menschheit los. Bevor die Hoffnung, die einzig positive Gabe, welche sich ganz unten in der Büchse befand, entweichen konnte, verschloss sie (möglicherweise auch Epimetheus) diese wieder, woraufhin alles Übel über die Menschheit kam.
Epimetheus (ancient Greek Ἐπιμηθεύς Epimētheús, German 'the one who thinks afterwards') is the brother of Prometheus in Greek mythology, as well as the latter's son of Iapetos.
Epimetheus received from Zeus the beautiful Pandora, the first woman created from clay by Hephaestus, who brought with her Pandora's Box named after her. This had been filled by each Olympian with a special gift, all of which - except for hope - were destructive. The plagues were intended by Zeus as punishment for humans for stealing fire from Prometheus. He warned his brother Epimetheus never to accept a gift from the gods so as not to harm people. However, Epimetheus did not heed the warning and, beguiled by her beauty, he married Pandora. She opened the box and unleashed all the plagues that were in the box on humanity. Before hope, the only positive gift that was at the bottom of the box, could escape, she (possibly also Epimetheus) closed it again, whereupon all evil came to humanity.
