Policarpo José Ribeiro, born in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, in 1966, is a Brazilian artist whose work is deeply rooted in both figurative and abstract expressionism. Early in his career, he was profoundly influenced by the cubist works of Picasso and Braque, as well as the sensitive forms and colors found in Paul Klee's art.
Policarpo's creations are characterized by his use of dark backgrounds, from which luminous shapes emerge, ranging from organic to geometric forms. His compositions feature capricious, intertwined, straight, and sinuously curved shapes that interact in a complex yet harmonious pictorial field. Known for experimenting with diverse materials and supports, Policarpo's art reflects a dynamic dialogue between light, form, and texture.
