Phillip is well known for his impeccable skill of carving sculptures using only the finest Zimbabwean materials. He brings us another exceptional sculpture made from Serpentine Stone, and was inspired by the culture of mining all around Africa which goes back to precolonial and colonial labour slavery times where men were used as machines by their slave masters.
This Carving is ditching the events during the “Wenela” (WNLA) Witwatersrand Native Labour Association; which was an incorporation concerned with the engagement of labour across Africa best known as Wenela Times where many labourers from around Africa went to work in the Gold Mines in South Africa and these Men were using manual digging equipment and not mining machinery. This was true to many Men who worked during the 19th and 20th century as mining labourers.
This is a magnificent piece of art, with a very rich history of the African Culture and is a reminder of the journey from slavery to the modern day.
