Peter Doig, born on April 17, 1959, in Edinburgh, is a contemporary Scottish painter known for his dreamlike landscapes that blend reality with surrealism. After moving with his family to Trinidad in 1962 and later to Canada in 1966, Doig's diverse surroundings deeply influenced his artistic work. He studied at prestigious art schools in London, including Wimbledon School of Art, Saint Martin's School of Art, and Chelsea School of Art, where he completed an MA in 1990.
His paintings are characterized by evocative colors and unique compositions, combining figurative and abstract elements to explore themes of memory and emotion. Common motifs in his works include canoes, solitary figures, and architectural structures set in natural environments.
In 2007, Doig gained international fame when his painting White Canoe was sold at auction for $11.3 million, setting a record for a living European artist. Other notable works include Blotter (1993), which won the John Moores Painting Prize, and Canoe Lake (1997), inspired by the horror film Friday the 13th.
Since 2002, Doig has resided in Trinidad, where he co-founded the StudioFilmClub with fellow artist Che Lovelace. In addition to his painting, he creates posters for film screenings, finding this project more immediately creative compared to his larger canvas works.
