Friday Nights Reserved for Dad
June 8, 2009
Pamela Carvajal Drapala

Trucks and automobiles
drive down Yuma Main Street,
pedestrians beat
the pavement with their feet.

Brother George and I
take in all the Friday nightlife
with our dark brown eyes.

“The Hole in the Wall” food stand,
Hamburgers much too large to hold
with tiny five-year old hands.

The most delicious hamburgers
dressed up in pickles,
shredded lettuce diced onions
and a juicy tomato slice;
a large cherry coke we
drink with lots of ice.

So much in sight for a child to view;
everything looks brand new.
Yuma’s simple Kress’ Five and Dime
I do not know it yet, but . . .
Daddy's running out of time.

Inside the Art Deco Yuma Theatre
teenaged girls dressed in
poodle skirts with bobby socks
selling small children like me sweet,
cherry “Charms” lollypops.

Cherish cinema films we watch;
time passes quickly
on Daddy’s wristwatch.

Daddy died two years later.
Yet, our childhood memories
with our dear Daddy
were made of nights as these.

Drapala Gallery, a visionary painter and photographer, is committed to giving a powerful voice through women's art and writing. Based on a deep belief in the power of art to express the strength of humanity, she has founded collaborative projects that transcend creative boundaries. One of her flagship projects is the publication of art anthologies, dedicated to women artists from around the world.

In 2018, Drapala Gallery published Strong Women's Art Anthology , a collective work celebrating women in art. The project brought together international artists and writers to share their stories, creations, and resilience. Building on the success of the first edition, Drapala launched a new call for submissions for its second volume, 2020, Women Artists' Create! , designed to reflect the strength of humanity through the challenges of the pandemic.

This collaborative project is an exceptional opportunity for female artists—painters, sculptors, photographers, writers—to submit their creations inspired by the year 2020. Drapala is committed to providing a free platform for these talents, and each artist will be able to share their work as well as the story that inspired it. Beyond the art, a portion of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to women’s and children’s shelters, adding a charitable dimension to this artistic initiative.

Drapala Gallery continues to push the boundaries of creativity and amplify women's voices in the art world, while encouraging deep reflection on the collective strength of humanity.
