British Contemporary Artist

Biography:

Paul was born in the UK and lives and works in the historic market town of Ringwood in the county of Hampshire. His interest in art began in his childhood years and was a favourite pastime at home and as a subject at school. At home he would often be absorbed for hours at a time painting or drawing which gave him a calmness of spirit and an inner contentment. With the encouragement of his art tutor it was during these years that he began using geometry as a foundation for creating art which gained him an award in senior school.

As an award-winning artist in his adult years he combines his passion for design with his love of beauty, colour and form to produce contemporary geometric abstract art using vibrant, gradated and tonal palettes. He enjoys working with different structural elements as a basis for his work, such as squares, triangles, rectangles, ovals, stripes, and curves in various configurations and colour combinations to produce compositions based around movement, energy and fluidity. The artist usually begins a piece of work with some ideas on paper prior to setting on the final composition using Computer Aided Design and Photoshop.

Inspiration for his art comes from a varied range of sources including the work of contemporary artists of this and the last century; particularly of the Art Deco period as well as visual and organic sources within the world around us. Having had a successful career as an engineering design draughtsman his methodical and precise way of thinking can also influence the conception of some pieces. His work is continually evolving as he explores the interrelationship of colours, various shapes and different textures. The artist has gained a number of awards in international art competitions.

Statement:

I find creating a piece of work a therapeutic process without worrying whether the results will be successful or not. My ideas come from thoughts of things and influences of the past, present and future; some are deliberate and some are experimental.  By definition my work is abstract but I don’t produce it for the purpose of having something to say or for it to have a hidden meaning; rather it is just the opposite and is straightforward and uncomplicated. I make the shapes, lines and colours so that they are pleasing to the eye and stimulating to the mind.
