Face à ces groupes djihadistes, par manque de moyens, l'armée et le gouvernement malien ont armé et financé des milices : les «dozo», qui ne sont pas un groupe ethnique mais une confrérie plus ou moins ésotérique de chasseurs traditionnels, principalement dogon ou bamanan, dont le rôle est d'assurer la sécurité des villages.
