Owe Sigmund wurde in Leipzig geboren und lebte dort bis zum politischen Umbruch 1989. Seine fotografische und filmische Laufbahn begann Mitte der 1980er-Jahre als Kameraassistent und Fotograf beim DDR-Fernsehen. 1989 wurde er an der Filmhochschule Babelsberg immatrikuliert, emigrierte jedoch im Sommer desselben Jahres in den Westen. In Köln arbeitete er als Kameramann für Film- und Fernsehproduktionen. Ab 1994 entstanden erste freie Kurzfilme und fotografische Serien. Seit dem Jahr 2000 lebt und arbeitet er in Berlin als unabhängiger Fotograf, Filmemacher und Kameramann. Als Fotograf war er unter anderem für visuelle Online-Storys des finnischen Fernsehens YLE tätig. Ein Wendepunkt in seiner künstlerischen Entwicklung war der Übergang von analogen Bildformaten zur digitalen Fotografie ab dem Jahr 2010. Parallel dazu begann er das Projekt Light Painting Places, in dem er mit Licht, Raum und Langzeitbelichtung experimentiert (an ausgewählten Orten weltweit). Seine Arbeiten verbinden dokumentarische Tiefe mit ästhetischer Abstraktion und spiegeln eine Suche nach Spuren, Präsenz und Erinnerung im Raum wieder.
