Aurore Montiel-Ginet is a contemporary French sculptor. The artist selects a personality from the mythological world for each of her Ironwood Souls, notes its history, then gathers the physical attributes and characteristics that define it. She is then free to translate the entire thing using carved wood and to clothe them in actual stitched iron lace. The metal that is present in everyday objects also undergoes many modifications, including cutting, folding, drilling, and assembly by "sewing-ligature" using steel wire.
Each of her characters needs a prolonged encounter during which intimacy and complicity are developed, forcing each to match the other's needs as effectively as possible in terms of appearance, equipment, and posture. The preference for a face devoid of characteristics surely reflects both a mindset that is somewhat humble and her desire to give her sculptures a timeless and global identity.
