Born in 1988, Nicolas Maire has lived and worked in France as a self-taught drawing artist since 2006. Primarily using charcoal on paper, he adopts a figurative style that explores the play of light and shadow to create timeless works.
From a very young age, Nicolas has always been attracted to drawing. Wishing to continue his old doodlings, he turned to the Plastic Arts option in high school. This period allowed him to define the framework of his reflections thanks to significant encounters and to discover coal, a real revolution in his graphic career. After some hesitation, Nicolas finally chose a non-artistic path, while keeping drawing as a hobby.
A few years later, Nicolas reconnected with his pencils and devoted himself fully to them. He began by creating several personal works, then decided to open his work to others. Since 2023, he has offered all kinds of commissions, combining photography and Photoshop practice to create custom designs.
Completely self-taught in his method and teaching, Nicolas uses graphite and charcoal as an introspection and outlet. By reducing the image to light and shadow, it eliminates any color distractions. By playing on these contrasts, his works take on a timeless dimension.
Fighting against stereotypes according to which black is sad or depressive, Nicolas wishes to highlight the dark side to show its presence and its peremptory existence. He seeks to exaggerate the details and subtleties to give credence to the quote from Jean-Paul Sartre: “The brighter the light, the darker the shadow… It is impossible to fully appreciate the light without knowing the darkness.” . »
