When Lagartito was two years old, he and his dad, the Chinese Chameleon, got involved in a serious steampunk car mishap. The dad got severe yet survivable injuries but the little child’s tender left femur was almost shattered. Thanks to the boy’s fervor for survival, he was able to use his leg again, (ah, a true Dimaguiba indeed). During his convalescence, his mom, the Witch Celina had to bring Lagartito to the Hospital Ortopédico Nacional located along the boundary of San Juan Del Monte and Mariquina. The little boy had to undergo painful therapy sessions and endless hours wearing contraptions like orthopedic shoes. Enduring the pain all throughout his early life could have contributed to his infamous temper when he grew up and became the hero of the first steampunk rebellion. The poison that failed to kill you would make you stronger, as wise men said. In this tableau, brought about by endless caffeine-fueled nights, I painted Lagartito and the Witch Celina walking along steampunk Calle Banaue from the hospital. The boy was wearing his orthopedic DM shoes. The lizard birthmark on his left arm was starting to be visible. Around them were indio vendors and a Camus ice cream man. On the horizons, three steam-powered dirigibles were floating mindlessly. Such a perfect day.
