Nancy J. McLaughlin is a contemporary American painter born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1954. From a young age, she was captivated by the wild, remote ravine near her home, owned by the Ohio State School for the Blind. This sanctuary away from the noise and confusion of human activity sparked her journey into painting and connecting with the energy of nature.

Over the years, McLaughlin has drawn inspiration from the Cascade and Olympic mountains through hiking, backpacking, and skiing. These experiences in the backcountry resonate in her paintings. She currently works from her home studio in Prescott, Arizona, and spends her summers in Copalis Beach on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington.

McLaughlin’s artistic goal is to evoke the perceptions of childhood. She views painting as an act of innocent, blind faith, aiming to invite viewers to reconnect with a child’s sense of wonder. Her work primarily features acrylics on canvas, with occasional use of graphite and colored pencils, and experimental surfaces like Tyvek. Her compositions blend naturalistic forms—often landscapes and organic shapes—with non-objective elements. The dynamic energy in her brushwork, mark-making, and vibrant color palette is central to her expression, reflecting the tension between her initial concepts and the evolving creative process.
