Ritrovo nelle opere dell’artista pugliese lo stesso materiale logoro fatto di lamiere traforate e contorte. I fogli metallici arrugginiti e bucherellati, i tondini di ferro attorcigliati a silhouette smunte. Le superfici corrose e fratturate, le figure smarrite e incerte. Gli spazi solitari squarciati dal vuoto. I volumi scarnificati arrampicati su campi geometrici primari.
Riconosco la memoria preziosa dell’arte povera, dell’astrazione fantastica, dell’espressionismo lirico-figurativo.
Dall’inizio del proprio lavoro, Morgese indaga specificità linguistiche e operative diverse, componendo e scomponendo pazientemente ogni elemento del linguaggio visivo in sculture, pitture, installazioni, disegni, assemblaggi vari. (M. Vinella)
Giovanni Morgese is a contemporary Italian painter, sculptor and iconographer. His intense artistic activity began in the 80s during which he stands out for his original sign-symbolic research oriented towards the analysis of archaic-religious realities. In the 90s the artistic discourse is oriented towards solidarity-humanitarian: resulting sticks become “poor” sculptures rich in profound humanity and Christian spirituality.
His continuous artistic research will lead him to the discovery of icons and their beauty which he will deepen thanks to studies and courses in iconography. From that moment on, his work, always supported by faith, will be characterized by artistic expressions attentive to the recovery of ancient tradition (icons) and to the translation of the same concepts into a modern-contemporary language.
In 2000 his work became the representation of a real and tangible violence through the investigation of his own face that loses its physical identity and becomes a mask of pain, thus identifying with suffering humanity waiting for a new day. Iron became Morgese's expressive medium. Starting from the figure: sheet metal shapes with an irregular and jagged outline. Figures reduced to the essentials and devoid of volume, similar to shadows, perforated, crossed by signs and symbols: figures as microcosms of larger realities.
Giovanni Morgese was born in 1951, in Italy, where he graduated in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari.
