Miles Begay

Miles Begay's abstract watercolors combine an earnest approach to the medium with a sophisti- cated sense of color. Like Georgia O'Keefe, Richard Deibenkorn, and Wolf Kahn before him, Miles Begay is an American painter influ- enced by the natural landscape. Begay, raised in the Southwest and in Colorado, captures the very delicate air quality of this particular region of our country. He creates paintings with a highly intuitive sense of color and light. With the most minimal of brushwork, Begay's nuanced technique can be likened to that of a Chinese calligrapher. Fresh and spontaneous, the visual passages throughout Begay's images linger just long enough to give an impression of the desert at day's end, the intricate weave of Native American textiles, a ripple in a pond. Begay's paintings teeter on the edge of a sus- pended moment. "Orange" is one such painting, intermixing cool green lattice-like forms with warm spirals that seem to pulsate towards the surface
