Mieke Van Cauter is een mixed media artist, die werkt met verschillende materialen en structuren. Het ene moment als verhalenverteller vanuit haar eigen ervaring of geïnspireerd door wat er zich afspeelt in de wereld. Het ander moment is het een spel met kleuren en zoekt zij de abstractie op. Hiervoor gebruikt zij acryl, houtskool en oliestiften.

Ze volgde bij verschillende leraren over de hele wereld opleidingen en workshops.

In 2016 kreeg haar enthousiaste vrijheid om te schilderen een ferme deuk door een medisch ongeval. Hierdoor kon zij van de ene dag op de andere niets meer met haar rechterhand en –arm.

Ze bleef echter niet bij de pakken zitten en startte een aantal maanden later aan haar revalidatie. Haar ultieme doel van haar revalidatieprogramma was: “Opnieuw kunnen zelfstandig wonen én kunnen tekenen & schilderen.” Door veel doorzettingsvermogen en een specifiek programma met dagelijkse oefeningen kon zij dit waarmaken.

Het schilderen en tekenen kregen een andere invulling. De stijfheid in haar hand verdween geleidelijk waardoor het dagelijks schilderen op bepaalde momenten een deugd en tegelijkertijd een noodzaak was. Daarnaast bleek het ook de ideale afleiding tegen de pijn.

De afgelopen jaren waren geen evident parcours en tegelijkertijd schonk het haar een vorm van rijkdom. Hierover zegt ze het volgende: “Schilderen werd mijn grootste hulpmiddel en maakt mij gelukkig. Ik wil graag mensen inspireren en tonen dat er nog altijd mogelijkheden zijn na een ongeval of ziekte. Door eenvoudige dingen, ook al is het maar spelen met kleur wordt de aandacht van pijn en verdriet wat afgeleid. Dit werkt vaak verlichtend en plaatst je dag een klein beetje in een ander perspectief.”
