Mickalene Thomas

Artist
Born 1971

Mickalene Thomas (born in Camden, 1971) is an African American visual artist known for her vibrant collages and paintings made with rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel. Her work explores themes such as identity, beauty, race, femininity, and sexuality, drawing inspiration from Western art history, Expressionism, Art Brut, and Afro-American pop culture.

Her subjects—often Black women portrayed in confident and sensual poses—challenge stereotypes and reclaim a historically denied centrality. Among her most famous works is Le déjeuner sur l’herbe: Les Trois Femmes Noires (2010), a reinterpretation of Manet’s masterpiece.

Thomas also works with photography, video, installation, and fashion, and has collaborated with artists like Solange and brands such as Dior. Her works are exhibited in major international museums, including the MoMA, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Barnes Foundation.
