Michelle Vaillant is a contemporary French artist with a lifelong fascination for stones of all kinds—whether polished, rough, dark as night, or sparkling in the light. This affinity led her to gather countless stones and natural treasures, a habit that sparked her desire to arrange and reshape them. This impulse evolved into her signature process: breaking and reassembling materials in inventive ways, adapting to both her creative vision and the constraints of her chosen materials and tools.
Vaillant’s artistic journey began with traditional materials like earthenware and Briare enamels, but her curiosity soon drove her to explore smalt, glass, and stone, along with the tools required to handle them. Working with volume added further technical challenges, as she began experimenting with the height of tesserae to play with how light and shadow interact across her pieces.
Today, Vaillant combines diverse materials to create striking contrasts, using glossy glass against matte stone and incorporating unconventional mosaic elements such as slate, fossils, driftwood, and rust. Her work merges texture and light, offering viewers a layered experience that highlights the beauty of natural contrasts.
