Michele D'Avenia is a contemporary Italian artist born in Sesto San Giovanni on December 9, 1964. He currently resides and works in Messina. Driven by a desire to master his craft, D'Avenia trained at the school of restoration of ancient paintings and worked in specialized workshops. Alongside this training, he undertook significant projects in decoration and scenography, all while dedicating himself full-time to painting and sculpture.
His artistic works are characterized by a refined technique and a highly realistic style, evoking strong emotional responses that reflect everyday gestures and moments captured in their natural progression. D'Avenia’s mastery of light creates a dynamic interplay reminiscent of Caravaggio's style, yet infused with a cinematic quality. He explores themes of love, subtle eroticism, and romanticism, contrasting with the American scene represented by artists like Jack Vettriano.
Over his thirty-year career, D'Avenia has participated in numerous personal and collective exhibitions, both public and private, with his works held in significant private collections and public institutions. In 1998, he represented Sicily alongside other artists at the Columbus Citizen Foundation Inc. in New York.
In 2002, he established his own exhibition space and workshop in a prime location in Messina. His accolades include winning the Mondadori Art Prize for sculpture in 2004 for his work "The Other Face of Sin," crafted from white Carrara marble. In 2009, he created "Compianto," a powerful religious piece known for its pictorial vigor and expressiveness, later exhibited at the Archbishopric of Messina in 2011 as part of the "Faith, Art, and Music" project.
D'Avenia also designed the monumental sculpture “October 1st 2009,” honoring the victims of the floods in Giampilieri and Scaletta. He showcased his work at the 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2011. The following year, he was selected by Whirlpool for the “Brief Roadshow 2012,” and one of his pieces was acquired by the Whirlpool Museum. In 2013, he held a significant anthology exhibition titled "Beauty is Possible" at the Royal Palace of Palermo. D'Avenia is recognized among the most important Sicilian artists from the 1930s to the present, featuring in the exhibition "Artists of Sicily," curated by Vittorio Sgarbi, across various prestigious venues including the Tonnara Florio di Favignana, Palazzo Sant'Elia in Palermo, and Castello Ursino in Catania.
