Gougane Barra - Reflections is an oil on paper and depicts one of the Artist's favourite places. Gougane Barra (Irish: Guagán Barra, meaning "the rock of Barra") is a settlement, situated in a beautiful peaceful spot, west of Macroom, on the road to Bantry in County Cork, Ireland. The name Gougane Barra comes from Saint Finbarr, who is said to have built a monastery on an island in the lake nearby during the 6th century. The present ruins date from around 1700 when a priest called Denis O'Mahony retreated to the island. During the times of the Penal Laws, Gougane Barra's remoteness meant that it became a popular place for the celebration of the Roman Catholic Mass. The nineteenth century oratory which stands near the original monastery is famous for its picturesque location and richly decorated interior. A set of limited edition prints, signed and stamped by the artist, is available; email Mícheál for full details.

Mícheál Ó'Muirthile is a national prize-winning artist from Ireland whose forte includes equine art, landscape and portraiture paintings & drawings. His work is in private collections throughout Ireland, England, continental Europe, America, Canada, Australia and the Middle East.

He is greatly influenced by his local place and by the immense pool of inspirational detail that is available throughout the island of Ireland.

“The artist..........is also a born adventurer. His explorations, unlike those of the tourist, are rewarded by the discovery of beauty spots unmentioned in the guide books, and with tireless curiosity and an exceptional proneness to wonderment, he will come upon objects of remarkable interest overlooked or even shunned by more disciplined observers.” These wise words by Augustus John, R.A., could not be bettered in providing a mental picture of where the artist Mícheál Ó’Muirthile centres his creativity.

He currently lives in the beautiful Lee Valley, in Macroom town, near Cork City in Ireland.  His people hailed from south of Dunmanway nearby to Ballinacarriga Castle, the seat of the Ó’Muirthile Clan in West Cork.
