Meike Van Riel is a contemporary Dutch artist who has been painting in Utrecht for sixteen years. She works primarily on large canvases, creating pieces that can reach up to two meters in width or height, using both oil and acrylic paints, although she enjoys working in smaller formats as well.
Initially, Meike focused on acrylic paint, concentrating on this medium to develop her unique style. After many years, she transitioned to oil paint, discovering a broader range of possibilities through various materials and combinations. Her artistic toolkit now includes India ink, colored ink, charcoal, ink pens, and ecoline, as well as explorations with black wax.
Although she was admitted to art academy a few years ago, Meike opted to continue her artistic journey independently. She prioritized her personal development and the evolution of her style, choosing to exhibit her work regularly. Engaging in discussions about art and receiving feedback is crucial for her, which is why she has taken lessons with chosen mentors over the years. Through these interactions with experienced artists, she has gained valuable insights into painting.
People are her primary source of inspiration, and she uses 'white' amid her colors as a metaphor for the shared human experience, referring to it as the 'essence.' In 2022, she began to explore new themes, including "solism" and 'simplicity,' which emerged as a significant fascination for her.
Meike often paints accompanied by music, favoring genres like jazz and classical, with musicians such as Maceo Parker and Miles Davis providing an inspiring soundtrack. She also enjoys creating ink pen drawings of flowers and local architecture, such as the Dom tower. Since 2019, these drawings have been reproduced and are increasingly available in various shops and cities.
Over the past five years, Meike has exhibited her work regularly in Utrecht, as well as in other cities and internationally. Her art can now be found in countries like America, England, and Canada, and her work has been featured in the New York catalog International Contemporary Artists, Vol. 8, which is available at notable institutions such as the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in the USA.
