Mediya Al Matroshy is a self-taught abstract artist and she paints songs.
Mediya Al Matroshy creates layered portals for connecting to the Divine through music. Through her audio-visual synesthesia - a perceptual phenomenon that involves the blending of multiple senses- Mediya experiences colors & forms in response to music. In her abstract works, Mediya translates the experience of moments in her life in which God speaks through divinely-inspired song tracks. The songs that Mediya listens to informs the colors, shapes & materials she uses, giving life to containers of emotions and wonder. Mediya was born in London, United Kingdom and is currently based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Her works have been exhibited in cities including Milan, New York, Dubai & Barcelona.
The primary aspiration of Mediya's work is to forge a profound communion with the Divine, capturing the intimate moments when I perceive God’s communication through music. These sacred encounters inspire an organic, gradual exploration of expression, as she[receives] songs that resonate deeply within her. As a synesthete, she experiences sounds as a vibrant tapestry of colors, shapes & textures which drives her to translate melodies into dynamic brushstrokes, allowing the essence of the music to flow onto the canvas. She works in an intuitive and unconscious manner to express the sublime emotions & the colors of the music that she sees.
In her process, she explores & embarks on a journey driven by the spirit, allowing intuition to guide her from start to finish. She embraces spontaneity, resisting the urge to redo or judge, and instead focus on capturing the colors & rhythm that emerge from the song she's painting.
"At the heart of my art lies a desire to bridge the ethereal and the physical, transforming spiritual experiences into tangible forms. Ultimately, I strive to create pieces that resonate with the viewer's own intuition, connection with God, inviting them into a space of reflection, healing, and soul-lifting connection. Each painting is a song, and that is how they are titled. I invite viewers to listen to the accompanying songs while engaging with my paintings to experience them to the fullest," Mediya explains.
