After life is a mask describing the phenomenon and disturbing circumstances surrounding death - the destiny of all living things (material). Most of the living creatures are fearful for their life; it's a natural instinct of protection against the unknown. Death is a place of no return, and the cessation of life in the body. We are composed of body, spirit and soul; the most important of which is the spirit. The blood in a body is life and the body is the material in which the spirit is dwelling, without the body, the spirit cannot dwell. So, every spirit needs a body to function in the physical world. Having an arm cut off, affects the functioning of the body, but does not stop the spirit remaining in that body. Without spirit, the body cannot function, the spirit is eternal, it's unseen, and is the true identity of every living thing. If life was the body only, anything affecting that body could cause the cessation of life, like having 2 legs cut off or being completely paralysed on the life support machine, but because of the spirit remaining in them, the paralysed body supported by a machine in the hospital will still be alive as soon as the spirit is in it, expecting a healing for that body to function again.
The painting is describing the life after the body is decomposed in most traditional or contemporary civilizations, specifically in the sculpture form, we can identify some masks which are the representation of something that has been alive before but which the spirit has departed (death mask). There are different kinds of spirit, and all of them operate in different manner, some are for evil purposes and others for good, some move from human to human in the form of reincarnation and some are for holy purposes and remain with the maker of all spirits for eternity dwelling.
