A Sicilian Expressionist
Maurizio Citti lived in Berlin, where he learned the lesson of the great masters of German Expressionism. But looking at Klimt's paintings... they were the eyes of a Sicilian accustomed to being imbued with a nature as strong as it is destructive. Thus, bright colors insinuate themselves against black backgrounds. What his eyes recall of Sicily, which even from a distance continues to exert its call of a mother-stepmother, are not landscapes, but the visual shock that Sicily offers to those who arrive there for the first time. It is an unstoppable whirlwind that leaves the flavor of colors, their essence, and which Citti expresses with the clear, rapid strokes of someone accustomed to living under a strong light that draws sharp contours from which nothing can be hidden.
Thus, of the Sicilian landscape, only the primary essence remains: color.
