Matvey Dergachev lives and works in Moscow. From 2007 to 2011, he studied at the Kalinin Moscow Art College, specializing as a craftsman in decorative and applied arts. From 2011 to 2017, he studied at the Surikov Moscow Academic Institute, specializing as a painter. During his studies, he was awarded a gold medal from the Russian Academy of Arts. From 2017 to 2018, he was a member of the Moscow Union of Artists, from which he voluntarily withdrew.
The artist works in oil painting and employs techniques from tempera painting, allowing him to explore the depicted images more deeply through attention to the textures and surfaces of objects. The composition of his paintings is also constructed with references to traditional techniques used by old masters, while at the same time, there are no focal points, and every fragment of the canvas surface is important. The subjects he uses are composed of seemingly random objects that create a chaotic structure of the world. The main themes in his work are the material world and humanity existing in space and time. The artist works in the genres of portraiture, landscape, and still life.
