Matthias Barth creates images of epic proportions that invite new reflections on nature, humanity and ourselves. The self-taught photo artist now lives in Munich when he is not travelling the world on his adventures. His unique perspective and adventurous spirit have earned him a loyal worldwide fan base. We follow him on his travels through the most diverse landscapes and cultures, which he captures with traditional and modern photographic techniques, and ask ourselves what beauty is still hidden beneath us.
Barth's journey into the world of photography began in 1992 when he first picked up an analog camera. What began with simple black and white images sparked a lifelong passion. His early years in the Black Forest laid the foundation for his love of nature and exploration. After graduating from a Munich film school in 1995, he honed his skills as a lighting technician and assisted some of Germany's best photographers. His work as a freelance cameraman in advertising, documentaries and television honed his eye for detail, composition and his understanding of how to produce images that resonate with audiences. Today, after two world trips, including an extensive trip through South America, he has cemented his commitment to the art of photography and deepened his conceptual framework around the dichotomy of wonder and isolation when traveling.
Barth's artistic practice is characterized by a quest to rediscover the world through different lenses - be it a film camera, an analog device or a drone. His work goes beyond a single style and encompasses a range of techniques to capture surreal, poignant images. His projects are diverse and include urban settings such as Dubai and Shanghai, the iconic Pan-American Highway and his esteemed series on the intricate art of Pakistani truck painters. His practice, situated between naturalism and surrealism, is an innovative display of different perspectives and compelling compositions that captivate the viewer.
The appreciation for Matthias Barth's work continues to grow through international collaborations and exhibitions. Following the incredible reception, attendance and praise of his solo exhibition "Shanghai.05" in Munich, Barth's works have been exhibited at institutions such as the renowned French label YellowKorner, Artfully Walls and the Tones Gallery in the Netherlands. He actively participates in international competitions and online galleries that enthusiastically promote his art.
