Martine Mabilleau is a contemporary French artist born in Paris. After completing her classical studies, she enrolled in the Beaux Arts de Paris, where she graduated in 1979 with a diploma in painting from the Atelier Yankel. Between 1978 and 1984, she trained in engraving at the Intaglio workshop ADAC in Paris under the guidance of engraver Roger Marage.
From 1984 to 1994, Mabilleau collaborated with printmaker Jean Cappelle in Val d'Oise. In 1994, she was one of 35 engravers participating in LA GRANDE ENGRAVING event, organized by five intaglio printmaking workshops, including Ateliers Moret. She continued her engraving work at Ateliers Moret from 2011 to 2015.
Mabilleau dedicated nearly four decades to teaching plastic arts in colleges and workshops for children, adolescents, and adults in Paris and its surrounding region, from 1973 to 2011. Currently, she is working on writing a book of poems.
Her artistic journey has led her to participate in numerous exhibitions both in France and internationally, including in Canada, the United States, Japan, and Cuba. Her engravings are held in prestigious collections, including the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Museum of Matanza in Cuba, and the Museum of Sapporo in Japan. Mabilleau is also a member of the Taylor Foundation.
In her paintings, she expresses her emotions through vibrant colors and the light that reflects off the transparency of oil, capturing the essence of her stories. In contrast, her engravings convey silent, secret feelings, where the work of copper in shadows allows chance to play a role, revealing what is hidden within history and the soul. The depth and intensity of her blacks enhance the vibrancy of the light in her work, creating a powerful interplay between darkness and illumination.
