This work was born from a personal attachment to old photographs of shops in front of which shopkeepers pose. A whole collective imagination emanates from these photos. I chose to impose a few constraints on myself: to only keep documents from everyday life and current events prior to 1930 and to work in a very limited color palette.

Marc Coutureau, born in 1956 in Paris, is a French artist who trained in sculpture and tapestry at the renowned BOULLE school in the 1970s. Throughout his career, he has exhibited his work as both a painter and sculptor in various galleries and has co-created monumental sculptures. After spending ten years working in national education, he shifted focus to the decorative arts, serving as a cardboard maker for workshops in Aubusson for five years.

Coutureau later expanded his expertise by creating museographies and scenographies for theaters, museums, exhibitions, and private clients. In 2000, he began working as a trainer at a detention center, where he led the creation of murals with individuals under judicial supervision. Over the span of 20 years, he facilitated the creation of hundreds of square meters of murals in various detention centers, all while continuing his work as a painter and fresco artist. For the past five years, Coutureau has fully dedicated himself to his painting practice.
