My artwork, “The Cyclops”, is a narrative composition that captures one of the most iconic scenes from The Odyssey: the encounter between Odysseus and Polyphemus. Designed as a sculptural frame, each element plays a role in the mythological storytelling.
On the left, Poseidon, the god of the sea and father of Polyphemus, looms as a symbolic figure, hinting at his wrath over his son’s blinding. In the center, the Cyclops dominates the composition, semi-anthropomorphic, embodying the strength and savagery described by Homer. On the right, Odysseus is depicted inside the cave, hidden behind a ram, holding the flaming wooden stake he will use to blind Polyphemus.
The inspiration for this piece comes from ancient Greek art and the way myths were depicted on vases and relief sculptures. I wanted to create a work that functions both as an artistic object and as a story, bringing the viewer closer to the intensity of the scene. I used techniques reminiscent of ancient sculpture but with a more contemporary approach to form and composition.
This work is not just a representation of a myth but also a reflection on the eternal struggle between human intelligence and divine power—a commentary on survival, fate, and retribution.
