By enclosing blocks in different hues of green within a metal mesh, the artist simultaneously tries to control these values, perhaps even restrict their free movement. At the same time he portrays them to the viewer directly and in good order, both showing their beauty in its full spectrum as well as their harmony with each other. In so doing he takes the viewer on a tour of beauty on full display, but under control, almost as a voyeur...

Chen Linggang, born in 1978 in Jilin Province, China, is an influential contemporary artist known for his unique integration of Western and Chinese artistic traditions. After graduating from the Environmental Art Department at Jilin Forestry University in 2000, Chen moved to Beijing, where he currently lives and works. His career features a robust portfolio of solo and group exhibitions in prestigious galleries and museums across China and internationally.

Chen's work is notably influenced by Marcel Duchamp and Wang Ximeng. Duchamp's conceptual art and use of readymades resonate deeply with Chen, who adopts a similar approach in challenging traditional art forms and exploring new artistic paradigms. Duchamp's influence on Chinese art began in the 1980s, significantly shaping the contemporary art scene by encouraging a break from conventional aesthetics and embracing conceptual innovation.

Chen’s artistic journey has been profoundly influenced by Marcel Duchamp’s conceptual art and Wang Ximeng’s classical Chinese painting. Duchamp's use of readymades and his challenge to traditional art forms resonate deeply with Chen, who incorporates similar conceptual elements into his work, questioning the nature and boundaries of art. This influence is evident in Chen's thought-provoking installations and mixed-media works, which often explore themes of history, memory, and cultural identity.

Additionally, Wang Ximeng’s meticulous and grandiose landscape paintings have inspired Chen to integrate traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary techniques. This fusion creates a unique visual language that bridges historical Chinese art with modern conceptual practices.

Chen Linggang has showcased his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including prestigious venues such as the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing and the Art+ Shanghai Gallery. His exhibitions often highlight his exploration of the dialogue between past and present, tradition and innovation.
