This body of work is a celebration of the land, light, and life of the Marina Baixa region on Spain’s Costa Blanca. Inspired by the bold freedom of Fauvism, the emotive power of Post-Impressionism, and the expressive worlds of artists like Van Gogh and David Hockney, these paintings immerse the viewer in a landscape that pulses with color and rhythm.
Ancient olive groves, sunlit pine forests, and the sweeping Mediterranean coastline are reimagined in vivid palettes and sinuous lines. Nature becomes a language of movement, tree trunks twist with expressive urgency, foliage dances in playful patterns, and the land radiates with the heat and harmony of the Spanish sun.
Drawn from observation and emotion, these works don’t aim to replicate the scenery, they interpret it. Each painting reflects the sensory memory of place: the crackle of dry earth, the shimmer of sea light, the stillness of dusk, the perfume of wild herbs on the breeze.

Living in the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol regions of Spain have been a huge source of inspiration especially when it comes to painting the sea. The Mediterranean Sea is known for its deep blue colour. The turquoise and aqua tones with the dark navy of the deep ocean are depicted with thick impressionistic brushstrokes and thick paint application.

Biography
Kirsty Wain is a contemporary British painter based in Spain, whose work explores the profound emotional connections between soul, place, and destiny. Her vivid, expressive paintings, rooted in post-impressionism and inspired by the bold colors and emotional freedom of Fauvism, translate natural landscapes and everyday still life into deeply personal, intuitive visual experiences.
Living in the sun-drenched regions of Andalucía and the Costa Blanca, Wain finds endless inspiration in the Mediterranean landscape. Her expressive depictions of olive groves, Jacaranda trees, fruit orchards, and coastal vistas reflect a reverence for nature and a sense of place charged with memory and spirit. These landscapes, while grounded in real geography, are rendered through layers of textured paint and fearless color, inviting the viewer into moments of stillness, reflection, and energy.Equally compelling are her still life flower paintings, where influences of Van Gogh, Matisse, and David Hockney are particularly apparent. In these works, vibrant floral arrangements burst with vitality and movement, their bold contours and saturated palettes echoing the modernist and postmodern traditions while remaining distinctly her own. Like her landscapes, these still lifes are less about representation and more about emotional resonance, capturing the essence of beauty in transient forms.
Wain’s recent work shows a marked turn toward Fauvist expression, where color is liberated from realism and used instead to evoke mood, memory, and identity. Patio Acrylic Paintings
I am working on a new series of acrylics of garden and patio scenes and really embracing the freedom and playfulness of working with this medium. The paintings are drying super fast in the Spanish Summer heat!

I have been engrossed in painting flowers! The evolution of my series of still life paintings featuring flowers, created with oil paints, has advanced from my initial quick acrylics on paper to my recent works showcasing irises in a Chinese vase and a textured vase of roses. While drawing inspiration from Van Gogh and Matisse, I have incorporated my own artistic style. There are more paintings in this collection to come, as I continue to explore this theme.

Coral Tree paintings
The coral tree is a beautiful tropical plant with brilliant red flowers. The first painting was completed at the beginning of Spring in Manilva, Andalucia. Although this painting has a bright blue sky it was actually a sunny but very cold morning. I was inspired by the twisted greyish mass of branches and did not initially notice the bright red flowers emerging at the base. The painting will feature in the Regeneration exhibition at Hansard Studio Gallery in London in December 2023. A few weeks I later returned to the same place and painted the second piece when the tree was in bloom.

An atmospheric, heavily textured impressionistic oil painting of the almond blossom trees in Andalucia, with beautiful goldfinches flying through the landscape.
The colours and textures are reminiscent of Van Goghs olive trees series, which was completed in 1889. Whilst also containing traces of Hockney's recent landscape work.
In this piece, I have included the goldfinches to describe the characteristics of the Andalucian environment and the life of the wilderness.

A beautiful impressionistic oil painting of the Mediterranean Sea seen from the coast in Manilva, Costa del Sol.
With vivid aqua and turquoise tones and lush thick paint application, flecks of pinks in the rocks highlight the everchanging light.
90x90cm 3cm deep, with the painting continuing around the edges.
